Best Denki deals Korinza Mall blow with pullout decision

Date Posted: 2008-04-09

Korinza Mall, which has had more than its share of struggling before gaining financial stability several years ago, has just been handed a setback blow.
Best Denki, Okinawa’s largest electrical appliance dealership, has served the Korinza Mall in Okinawa City notice it’s shutting its doors before September. Best Denki accounts for 30% of the Korinza Mall tenant income, according the third-sector Okinawa City Amenity Planning Company, that operates the mall.
Okinawa City’s vice mayor says Amenity Planning Company will be suffering financially if another occupant isn’t found to replace Best Denki. Hokei Shimabukuro, who doubles as president of the Amenity Planning Company in addition to vice mayor duties, says Korinza Mall is now searching for a new occupant to fill Best Denki’s shoes. With Best Denki in the building, Korinza Mall has been operating profitably.
Kenichi Yada, the Best Denki Okinawa District director, says “actually, the decision to withdraw was made a long time ago because we made no profit.” Yada says the company stayed through this year, wanting to be good citizens, but “it’s enough for us to stay, and now we must go.”
