Okinawa Cleanup Yuimaru (International Coastal Cleanup)

For those of you who are interesting in having a positive influence on Okinawa, your chance has arrived. Okinawa OCEAN (Ocean Culture & Environment Action Network) is hosting the annual Okinawa Cleanup Yuimaru 2003 on September 20 and 21. The Okinawa Cleanup Yuimaru is part of the International Coastal Cleanup--a worldwide event dedicated to ridding the world's oceans of marine debri. This is a great opportunity, and you can help clean Okinawa's coasline during the Yuimaru by participating as a volunteer, or organize your own cleanup with a group of friends for family members. Three sites have been selected for cleaning this year:

Sunabe Seawall (Miyagi Kaigan), Chatan
Date: Saturday, September 20, 2003
Cleanup Area: Underwater and along the seawall
Time: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Senaga Island, Tomishiro-son (Near Naha Airport)
Date: Sunday, September 21, 2003
Cleanup Area: Coastline and roadside
Time: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Cape Maeda, Onna-son
Date: Sunday, September 21, 2003
Cleanup Area: Underwater and coastline
Time: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

You can also become a beach captain and clean your favorite beach! Pick up data cards and a Beach Captain's packet at Tsunami Gear or MCCS Scuba Lockers.
