Protesters upset at mysterious burning of peace ribbons at Camp Schwab

Date Posted: 2008-04-02

Peace groups opposed to the military’s plan to build a new airfield in the Henoko area to replace Futenma Marine Corps Air Station have been tying symbolic peace ribbons to the chain link fence at Camp Schwab, for ages.
More than 500 were tucked into the fence, but now they’ve nearly all been burned. The peace groups are angry at the discovery, and are demanding some answers as to who set them on fire and burned them. Many of the ribbons had been made by individuals overseas and mainland Japan.
Takako Shinohara has tied many of the ribbons to the fence in recent months, and now wants to know “who burned out hope?” Shinohara says “these ribbons were our wish for peace. We don’t want the new air station in this area, and we are upset.” Police say they’re investigating the burning, but note they’ve no clue as to who may have done it.
