Thief abducts mother and son, forces ATM withdrawal

Date Posted: 2008-03-30

A middle aged man kidnapped a 31-year-old woman and her son in an Omoromachi supermarket parking lot at knifepoint, then forced her to drive to another area to get money from an ATM machine.
The woman and her son had just finished shopping when a man wearing black sunglasses and a black hat forced his way into the car, brandishing a knife as he told her “You know what I need. I need money.” Pushing the knife into the woman’s side, he ordered her to “get out of here now” and drive to another supermarket to get money from an ATM.” The woman later told police her assailant kept the knife against her the entire ordeal Friday afternoon, preventing her from escaping from the car.
Arriving at a second Naha City supermarket, the woman followed her captor’s direction, withdrawing ¥100,000 as he stood by her side. After getting the money, the man ordered the victim to drive to Urasoe City, where he got out of the car and disappeared.
Police are now searching for the man, who’s described as about 40-50 years old, and 160-170 centimeters tall.
