Marine NCO busted on DUI, hit-and-run charges

Date Posted: 2008-03-30

A Marine Corps sergeant is under arrest, charged by Okinawa police with causing an accident early Friday in central Okinawa, then fleeing the scene.
Sergeant Zaman Umair’s encounter began shortly before 1 a.m. Friday in Naha City’s Aja area on Highway 58, when his car bumped into the rear end of another vehicle, then took off. Police say the cargo truck driver tried to stop the 24-year-old Marine from fleeing, but failed.
The driver then pursued Umair for a about a kilometer before blocking in his vehicle. The truck driver called cops, who took Umair into custody. Military police joined the case, along with Naha City Police. Umair, who is stationed on Camp Foster, was charged with DUI after having a blood alcohol level measured at 0.64 milligrams.
Police are preparing the case for transfer to the Prosecutor’s office, possibly as early as Saturday.
