Gate 2 Street business declines foster new promotions by citizens

Date Posted: 2008-03-27

Okinawa City businesses admit their revenues have dropped substantially since the US military curfew went into effect, and they’re now joining with local citizens to promote Gate 2 Street to lure new customers.

Restaurants, snacks and bars say business is down quite a bit since the 10 p.m. curfew and off-base drinking ban was implemented by the military earlier this month. Few Americans remain on the streets as patrons as evenings progress, leading businesses to look for new customers.

The Gate 2 Street Shopping Arcade has already held a musical promotion with “Gintenza”, an amateur group. The musical, titled ‘Shopping Mall 44’, was performed by students, housewives and children, all local residents. It told the history of Okinawa City’s Gate 2 Street, as it was from 60 years ago to the past decade. The event brought laughter, plenty of music, and enticed visitors into restaurants in Koza district.

Okinawa City is also keying on its new Koza Music Town, looking for both business occupants and patrons for those businesses. Officials say the goal is to make the shopping arcade a place to bring back the good times of the past, and to make the community a happy town supported by all citizens.
