Citizen group opposes spy cam installation

Date Posted: 2008-03-21

Proposals to install surveillance cameras in entertainment areas frequented by American servicemen have drawn fire from a local citizen’s group in Okinawa City.

“We don’t want to set up security cameras on the street,” Yumiko Ueze told Okinawa City mayor Mitsuko Tomon during a meeting. “We don’t think they are needed to prevent American military scandals and accidents.” Ueze called on the mayor “to reverse the idea of setting security cameras on the street,” offering no reason for the request.

Tomon says “I know there are a lot of people against setting up security cameras, but on the other hand, some people want them.” The mayor promised to “discuss this matter carefully, because my responsibility is to insure safety and a comfortable life.”
