Prosecutors demand heavy jail time in stabbing death

Date Posted: 2008-03-20

A bloody fight between two brothers in tranquil Nakijin Village in northern Okinawa last December ended with the younger sibling dead on the floor.
The elder brother told police after the stabbing he and his brother argued over business. The 73-year-old man then went into his 55-year-old brother’s house and stabbed him while he slept. Prosecutors called it a vicious crime during final arguments in the trial, and demanded a 15-year prison sentence be meted out.
“The younger brother grew sleepy and the older brother waited until he fell deep into sleep before taking an ice pick and stabbing him to death,” the prosecutor argued. “That was cruel and deliberate killing.” The defense countered “No, it’s not true. The older brother was very drunk that night, and confused, so he didn’t have any ability to act responsibly.”
The court is expected to rule in the case by May.
