Airman fined for breaking into office building

Date Posted: 2008-03-17

An airman who slipped away from Camp Shields while the military was under a general officer-ordered lockdown, then broke into a private office building nearby, has been sentenced by the Naha Summary Court.
Airman Wesley Taft, who is stationed at Kadena Air Base, was fined ¥100,000 by the court for his breaking the front door to the Okinawa Contractors Association and trespassing into the offices March 2nd. Taft had climbed over a fence on the military installation in violation of Lt. Gen. Richard Zilmer’s directive that all SOFA-status personnel be restricted to the bases, then took a metal pipe and broke into the office building.
Security guards responding to building alarms called police, who arrested Taft nearby. Police say the airman was drunk at the time of his arrest.
