Korean gal aces Okinawan to win Daikin Orchid tourney

Date Posted: 2008-03-13

A 22-year-old Korean who signed on to the Japan Ladies Professional Golf Association tour only a year ago, took advantage of a late holes floundering by a Japanese favorite to win the Daikin Orchid Ladies Tournament Sunday.

Song Bo Bae outlasted Sakura Yokomine, firing a seven-under-par final round. Yokomine’s 10 under par was four down from Bae, who birdied two of the par-5 holes, then birdied two of the final four holes en route to her 14 under par 202.

The 22-year-old Song is one of Korea’s young golf superstars, turning professional in 2004. She broke into the Korean scene in 2003, winning the Korean Women’s Open as a 17-year-old high school girl, a feat reminiscent of Okinawa’s Ai Miyazato. Song finished 16th on the Japan LPGA tour last year.

Im Una and Miki Saeki took third and fourth at the Ryukyu Country Club event, while Momoko Ueda tied for sixth with Miho Koga. Okinawa’s Ayako Uehara finished 13th, while Shinobu Moromisato shared the 18th place spot along with seven other golfers.
