Airman arrested for trespassing after sneaking off base

Date Posted: 2008-03-03

Okinawa City Police Sunday apprehended a young U.S. Air Force enlisted man after offices of the Okinawa Contractors Association were broken into.
The airman, Wesley Taft, admitted to police he broke the glass door leading to the association offices about 6:40 a.m. Sunday. The break-in triggered alarms, which attracted a security guard, who called police. Taft was found holding a 1.8 meter long iron bar when arrested about 200 meters away.
Police say Taft, who is assigned to Kadena Air Base, had been drinking. Taft told police he crawled through a Camp Shields fence to get off base. All U.S. military personnel are restricted to base by order of Okinawa’s senior military commander, Lieutenant General Richard Zilmer.
