Teacher reprimanded for taping student’s mouth

Date Posted: 2002-08-31

A 33-year-old teacher at a Naha City elementary school was reprimanded after it came to light that she had taped a student’s mouth shut with adhesive tape.

According to the board of education, the student had angered the teacher with his unruly behavior. When the boy continued his noisy ways the teacher finally taped his mouth shut with a tape. When the lunchtime arrived, she removed the tape and reportedly asked the boy whether he had learned a lesson.

A week later a parent of another student contacted the school principal to report the incident. When asked by the principal, the teacher admitted taping the boy’s mouth shut. The principal then reprimanded the teacher who reportedly expressed regretting the incident and promised never to do such thing again.

The teacher and principal also visited the boy’s home and apologized. The principal also reported the incident to the Board of Education that is considering whether additional disciplinary action against the teacher would be warranted.
