Miyakojima to take steps after being overwhelmed by garbage

Date Posted: 2008-02-21

Being labeled ‘The Paradise of Illegal Dumping’ is a title no city wants, and Miyakojima City is no exception.

With illegal waste materials totaling more than 6,900 tons, all of it dumped within the confines of the city, Miyakojima City’s mayor decided it’s time for some changes. Akira Ishimine, who says 90% of all illegal waste volume in the entire prefecture is in his Miyakojima City, has ordered residents to begin using the designated plastic trash bags system beginning in April. The designated system requires people to purchase the bags, a program that covers waste disposal costs.

Ishimine says the money from the paid trash bags will also be used to collect trash and to clean illegally dumped trash. Miyakojima City says it will take 2~3 years to clean up the mess. Toxic Industrial wastes accounted for 2,937 tons in 2006while general waste totaled 4,046 tons. The mayor says much of the illegal dumping is not done by his citizens, but by visitors to the island.

Miyakojima City has established a special budget of ¥10 million to monitor illegal dumping with soon-to-be-purchased surveillance cameras. Ishimine says most of the illegal dumping places are along the community’s beaches.
