Complaint about rape leads Young Okinawa native to jail

Date Posted: 2008-02-21

Mitsumasa Iha was incensed by news reports of a 14-year-old Okinawa girl being raped by an American GI, and called the Okinawa City Police to tell them to “thoroughly investigate the case.”

Police began their investigation with a check on Iha, an Okinawa-native now working in Yokohama as a scaffolding worker. Iha had telephoned police as a representative of a right-wing political group. With name in hand, police found Iha was on a nationwide ‘wanted’ list, and immediately called the Nishi Police Station in Osaka. Nishi Police put Iha on the list after he was charged with stealing ¥90,000 plus underwear living next door to him in an Osaka apartment complex last summer.

Nishi Police say Iha committed the thefts on two separate occasions, and they added him to the nationwide ‘wanted’ list last November. Iha told police “I had no idea I was on the wanted list.” The 25-year-old, accompanied by his employer, turned himself in to the Kanagawa Prefecture Police in Yokohama.
