Wild weekend lands 18 Okinawan teens in legal hot water

Date Posted: 2008-02-19

The booze was flowing freely in three Okinawa communities Saturday and Sunday, and police decided enough was enough, swooping in to apprehend groups of teenagers illegally drinking.
Yomitan, Nanjo City and Motobu cops targeted locations in all three communities, arresting 18 youth. None were Americans or American dependents. The crackdown in Nanjo City occurred Saturday and Sunday near the city’s waste treatment facility, netting a high school girl, a high school boy and three young 17- and 18-year-olds. Police say the teens had made the area a regular party location.
Two 16-year-old boys were picked up near a Yomitan Village convenience store late Saturday evening. Both were charged with drinking awamori, an Okinawa liquor, and taken to the Kadena Police Station. Police also took a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old into protective custody, but said those two boys had not been drinking.
Three 16-year-old girls and three 16-year-old boys were busted in Motobu Town, along with three 15-year-old boys over the weekend. They were all apprehended by Motobu Police, who say the nine teens were drinking awamori, something not permitted because of them being underage.
