Forum promotes a zero emission society in Okinawa

Date Posted: 2002-01-31

The Zero Emission Forum was held for the first time in Okinawa on Jan. 25 to work toward the goal of establishing a society that recycles. Organized by the city of Naha and United Nations College, the meeting focused on developing unique measures enabling Okinawa to preserve its natural environment, which is closely related to its tourism industry. One speaker suggested that electric busses carrying bicycles could be used for sightseeing. Another participant urged the government to first create a system that would promote a zero emission society, while others floated the idea of creating new businesses from recycling. Key speaker Koichi Wada, head of facility management for the Hotel New Otani in Tokyo, said that waste could become economically viable even after being discarded, referring to his program for converting all of the hotel’s food refuse into fertilizer.
