Capital city to soon launch ‘Eco Action Naha’ program

Date Posted: 2008-02-13

Concerns over global warming has inspired Naha City to create a new program, Eco Action Naha, for implementation beginning in April.
The program’s thrust is to educate citizens, in simple, everyday terms, how to prevent global warming, and how each individual can get involved. The one-year Eco Action Naha program has 78 elements that citizens can involve themselves with to protect the environment. There is no cost for citizens to get involved in the project.
The city’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gases 9.9% over the coming three years. The environmental preservation action plan links citizens, offices and companies together with the government to make Naha City a clean environment. An Eco calendar is now available at city offices and public halls. The specially created calendar explains how people can track over three-month periods how much utilities cost, and how much they are able to reduce consumption.
Examples of simple, but effective tips on the list of 78 items: Cut off lights when not needed. Unplug appliances when not in use. Shower diligently by turning off water while soaping up. Keep plants, flowers and greens on gardens and porches. Use the bus instead of a personal automobile. Use personal shopping bags instead of plastic bags offered by stores and supermarkets.
