Attempted murder suspect nabbed at last minute

Date Posted: 2002-08-31

Police arrested a 66-year-old man Aug.22 on suspicion of attempted murder. The incident took place in Urasoe City in 1987. The man almost got away with his crime as less than a month remains before the 15-year statute of limitations runs out.

Police said Seiichi Ikehara, a carpenter, initially denied but eventually admitted that he stabbed a 63-year-old woman several times with a knife at her bar in Urasoe on Sept. 19, 1987. The police obtained an arrest warrant for Ikehara right after the incident, but the suspect went missing. The statute of limitations on the case was to expire Sep. 19, and Okinawa Prefectural Police decided to attempt one last time to track down the suspect. Acting on a tip that the man was often seen at a park in Okinawa City the police set up the park under surveillance. They saw Ikehara at the park Thursday and arrested him. Investigators say that Ikehara decided to kill the woman after she wanted to end the relationship. The victim died of illness in 1999 at the age of 74.
