Man drowns while harvesting seaweed

Date Posted: 2008-01-24

A malfunctioning air tank feeding oxygen to a diver harvesting seaweed near Onna Village caused a man to drown.

The death occurred while two brothers were 2.5 meters underwater near Maekaneku Fishing Port, gathering seaweed. They discovered no oxygen coming through their regulators and tried to signal a third man on the surface in a boat. The pair wanted to be pulled back aboard the boat, but officials say it appeared the friend didnít notice the brothersí plight.

Authorities say the compressor had run out of gas. By the time the man on the surface refueled and started the engine, sending air below, it was too late for the older brother, who panicked and drowned. His younger brother brought him to the surface, but it was too late.
