Date Posted: 2003-08-30

Kadena Town Mayor Tokujitsu Miyagi visited the Commander of the 18th Operations Group on Friday, protesting against the training late night noisy training that evoked complains from residents. Those training operations had continued until late night. The mayor protested that the town had not been given prior notice of the training as required, and requested that the training be suspended.

The commander admitted that the base had used firecrackers during the training at about three in the morning, but said that had been an error for which he apologized. He also apologized that there had been no warning before the exercise. He promised that base officials would be more cautious in the future.

However, he said that the training would continue because it was necessary and extremely important. He also said that it would be very difficult to further reduce the noise during the exercises because “the volume is already at necessary minimum, but we’ll see if we can find a way to improve.” The training exercises have ended.
