Building blocking highway construction demolished

Date Posted: 2008-01-21

A disgruntled building owner who refused to sell his property to make way for a new highway saw the building removed over the weekend.
All land required to construct the new Shuri Ishimine area highway in Naha City had been purchased and the owners moved away, except one. The owner of a two-story building with apartments on the second floor had steadfastly refused to sell, despite more than 50 negotiating sessions with Naha City.
The project begun in 1995, and scheduled for 2010 completion linking Haebaru and Itoman City, and had a 2.2 kilometer stretch finished for almost a year, except for the section containing the building. The building owner had repeatedly rejected the offered purchase price, year after year, finally sending sending Naha City to court. The court ordered the building owner to comply, sell and move, but he refused.
Naha City’s patience wore out Friday, and heavy construction equipment moved onto the property and demolished the building. As the weekend drew to a close, the land was clear and ready for highway construction workers to begin preparing the land for its new use.
