Higher fuel costs trigger ANA fare hikes

Date Posted: 2008-01-18

The increased cost of jet fuel has sent All Nippon Airways to the calculator to figure how much it needs to raise prices.
The answer, says ANA, is 9%. Beginning April 1st, ANA will raise its rates ¥1,100 to ¥4,200 on each one-way ticket. Airline officials say the average increase won’t actually be 9%, but will average 2.6%, or ¥430 per ticket.
ANA, at the same time, says it will keep its discount air fares untouched, noting roughly 80% of its customers purchase discount tickets. The move, airline officials say, is to keep customers loyal to the airline instead of switching to other modes of transportation, including the bullet trains, discount airlines or buses.
