Okinawa governor slashes own, vice governor’s salaries

Date Posted: 2008-01-17

Hirokazu Nakaima will take a 10% cut in pay beginning in April as Okinawa Prefecture tightens its financial belt.

The Okinawa Governor, whose salary is already among the lowest in Japan’s prefectures, will dip to ¥17.6 million. His vice governor, Zenki Nakazato, will have his paycheck trimmed 7% to ¥14.3 million. Okinawa’s governor has suffered a 15% pay cut since 1998, while the vice governor’s wages dropped 12%. The new wage scale is in effect until the end of their terms.

Nakaima will make an appeal to Prefecture Assembly members to cut their own salaries to enhance the prefecture’s budget numbers, and to make things more equitable among prefecture employees. Some 23,000 prefecture workers, school teachers and police have had their incomes cut 3%.

Vice Governor Nakazato says there are more cuts coming. He says “not only us, but assembly members, hospital managerial people and the chairman of the Board of Education should have their pay reduced.” The Assembly will be asked to make decisions reducing their salaries during a February business meeting.
