Fire kills one on Kume Island

Date Posted: 2008-01-11

An early morning residential fire on tiny Kume Island has claimed the life of one man.

Firefighters say they found the man’s body in the debris of the fire. The fire broke out about 4 a.m. January 3rd, and quick response had the blaze under control within a half hour. As flames died down, firemen found the body of a man they believe is Yasuzen Yoshinaga.

The 87-year-old Yoshinaga is missing. Naha Police are now investigating the fire, to determine if the man who died in the fire was Yoshinaga, and if the fire was an accident or arson. Although one of Yoshinaga’s sons lives in another home on the property, the fire was reported by a neighbor, police say.

Police say they’re not ruling out foul play in the incident. They say an investigation will focus on whether someone set the house on fire, or if someone killed the victim.
