Okinawa promised increase in tourists from Hokkaido

Date Posted: 2002-01-31

An official delegation that arrived at Naha Airport from Sapporo on Jan 25 pledged an increased number of visitors to Okinawa from Hokkaido. The entourage, which included the vice governor of Hokkaido as well as group leader Shoji Fujii, said they wanted to thank Okinawa for supporting tourism in Hokkaido when Mt. Usu erupted in March 2000. Stating that the time had come to return the favor, Fujii announced that more than 23,000 people are expected to visit Okinawa by the end of March. Two hundred tourists arrived with this group, and numerous charter flights are scheduled to transport visitors in February and March from Japan’s northernmost prefecture to its southernmost.
