Okinawa traffic fatalities drop by one-thirdDate Posted: 2008-01-08 Police say 43 people died in traffic accidents last year, a decrease of 19 from 2006. It was the lowest number of traffic fatalities in Okinawa Prefecture since 1947. Officials say they hope the prime contributing factor to the decline is the revision of traffic road rules last year. The new rules imposed harsh penalties for driving offenses. Strong penalties for drunk driving are now in effect, including rules penalizing non-drivers who permit a drunk to drive. Officials say it’s a good sign that drunk driving is being curbed. |
