Crows wipe out 15% of local pineapple crop

Date Posted: 2007-12-28

Crows love pineapple, and that’s spelled disaster for northern Okinawa’s pineapple farmers.

JA Okinawa’s Northern Section Head Office has announced damages to this year’s crop totaled ¥12 million, leaving farmers disappointed. “Some farmers lost 50% of their products,” a JA Okinawa Agricultural Center official said. “It’s too much damage caused by crows. We need to do something.”

Some 315 farmers banded together and conducted research on what to do to save their corps. Putting nets over the fields will help curb damages but the cost of nets is too expensive, they say. The farmers are asking for help from the Prefecture or the central government in buying nets.

The Okinawa Prefecture General Bureau office says “If the farmers do research about the crow damages, we will concern ourselves with subsidy money. Everybody can apply for a subsidy.”
