Zamami garbage piles up as village and vendor feud

Date Posted: 2007-12-28

Trash piles are making a mountain at the Zamami Village garbage disposal site, where the incinerator is broken and out of order.

More than 400 tons of refuse is currently on site, and village officials are ready to ask other communities to help with disposal. Zamami Village and the vendor who installed the incinerator are locked in a court battle, and until a court ruling comes, the village can’t purchase repair parts. Officials say they’ve no idea how soon the court will even finish its ruling.

The high technology incinerator machinery belongs to the village, which burns the garbage and made natural gas from it, broke after the village changed its operations. Rising oil costs saw Zamami Village collect garbage and try to burn it all at once, a move that caused the incinerator machinery to break.

Zamami Village asked another vendor to make repairs, but he couldn’t because the incinerator copyright is owned by a different company. That company, and purchasing parts, is at the heart of the court case. Until it’s settled, the garbage heap continues to grow.
