G-8 science leaders to meet on Okinawa

Date Posted: 2007-12-26

Ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will be a key topic in June, when scientists gather in Okinawa for the first Group of Eight meeting of science and technology ministers.
The G-8 science meetings are being held in advance of July’s G-8 Summit at Lake Toya hot springs resort in Hokkaido. Key ministers and science experts will be discussing technological assistance to emerging developing nations in order for them to meet new emission standards. Officials say the science meetings are only one of a series of G-8 mid-level meetings paving the way for the summit.
Leaders from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and the United States will join with Japan for the summit. Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda is expected to attend a Tuesday meeting of the Council for Science and Technology Policy, at which time announcements of the science meetings will be unveiled by Science and Technology Minister Fumio Kishida.
