Flash flooding sweeps child to her death

Date Posted: 2007-12-24

A Friday afternoon drive home from school turned deadly in Yaese Town when the Hotoku River flooded streets and bridges, forcing two children from a car stuck in the water.
Flash flooding and thunderstorm warnings had been posted for southern Okinawa, but Yoshinobu Matsumura wasn’t aware of the danger as he drove through the Kochinda area. Driving his two grandchildren from school, he approached a bridge, then stopped halfway across because water poured into the car. The 69-year-old grandfather told the two children, a seven-year-old girl and four-year-old boy, to get out of the car and run.
A second car traveling behind Matsumura saw the children, stopped and snatched the little boy from the swirling waters. The fast-moving current swept the girl away. Rescue workers searched through the night, looking for the youngster. The girl’s body was found Saturday morning, five kilometers away from the bridge.
