Yoshinoya to expand hold on Don’s steak restaurants

Date Posted: 2007-12-23

Gyudon beef dish giant Yoshinoya Holdings says it’s preparing to take a majority share of Don’s steak restaurants in Japan.
Yoshinoya says it expects the move to majority ownership will revitalize the lagging steakhouse chain, and increase profits. Yoshinoya is looking to increase its holdings to more than 50% of stock in the coming months. Don’s, the country’s largest steak restaurant chain, is listed on the Osaka Securities Exchange.
The gyudon served by Yoshinoya centers on American beef mixed with rice. Yoshinoya says it believes a closer link to Don’s will allow more favorable American beef prices, while cutting distribution costs for both companies.
Yoshinoya already hs the Kyodaru shshi restaurant chain, as well as the Hanamaru udon noodle chain. Shuji Abe, the Yoshinoya president, has repeatedly says he wants to take his company into a realm of many different styles of restaurants.
