Obstinate land owners stall the new Ishigaki City Airport

Date Posted: 2007-12-21

Only 85% of the land needed to build the new Ishigaki City Airport has been purchased, and it appears the rest may be years in coming thanks to a group of land owners who refuse to sell their property.

A total of 43,733 square meters of land is needed for the airport, but New Ishigaki Airport Supervisor Keiichi Nerome says 15% of the land “is now, in some cases, in the courts and we can’t get it. We were supposed to have all the land this year.” Nerome says “the land owners want more money than what the prefecture is proposing, and we don’t know how long it will take to finish the court cases.”

The Okinawa Prefecture Assembly tourism promotion committee group and the New Ishigaki Airport Construction Promotion Special Committee Team have met to discuss what to do next. Airport Supervisor Nerome notes the construction problems and land acquisition squabbles have been going on for more than 20 years, and wonders if they’ll “ever come to the end.”
