Tahitian dance coming to Uruma City in January

Date Posted: 2007-12-14

Tahiti is a South Pacific paradise, one of 118 islands spread across the region between California and Australia.

Often billed as the last true paradise on earth, Tahiti’s seiren call attracts thousands of tourists to its never ending summer. It’s lush and tropical, and the islanders captivate visitors with their personalities and calm demeanors. Excitement begins with Tahitian dance, powerful and glamorous as native costumes are bright and attractive.

Tahitian music, a mixture of powerful drumbeats providing the backdrop for the bewitching ladies dancing, is a cultural experience. An Okinawa group has mastered Tahitian dance, and is performing internationally.

Tiare Heipua won a grand price for its Tahitian dance in Tokyo’s Melpark Hall in September, performing at the Tahiti Nui Heiva I Japan. That win gives them participation rights in next Spring’s world dancing tournament in Honolulu.

The group will perform its award-winning numbers before the hometown folks January 19th, with two shows at Uruma City’s Art Theater. The end of the first show features the dances the group performed in Tokyo, while the second features the show team of the dance group Tiara Heipua.

Tickets to the January 19th shows are on sale now. Call Islander Okinawa at (090) 7687-4733 for information, reservations and tickets.
