Motobu Town brother, sister drown in river

Date Posted: 2007-12-12

Two pre-school age children, a brother and a sister, have drowned in a river in Motobu Town’s Ohama area.
The two bodies were spotted in the river shortly before noon Monday by a construction worker, who alerted Motobu Town police. Rescue workers pulled the two, a five-year-old boy, Kaname, who was floating face down, and a four-year-old girl, Momoko, floating face up, from the water. Heart massage was performed on both, but both were pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. Police say there were no signs of injury on either child, and said autopsies would be performed.
The slow moving river waters are only one meter deep in the area where the youngsters were found, and are protected by a fence and stairs going to the water. Police say the fence was open. There was construction bridge work in progress at the location on Route 449, and lots of traffic, but none of the workers saw the children playing near the water.
Officials reconstructing events say the brother and sister were visiting at their father’s friend’s house. The father noticed his daughter had disappeared from the home, and asked his son to go find her. Kaname went in search of his sister, but never returned.
The father and his friend were talking, then heard sirens and went out to look. It was then the man realized the victims were his own children.
A neighbor says a fatal accident occurred at the same spot many years ago. She said it was eerily similar, with the victims also a brother and sister. The boy died and the girl survived then, leading the neighborhood to consider the area dangerous and everyone stayed away.
