III MEF musical ambassadors promise excitement at pair of holiday concerts

Date Posted: 2007-12-06

Santa Claus is teaming up with the III Marine Expeditionary Force Band next weekend for two holiday concerts featuring not only the traditional Christmas favorites, but also holiday sounds from other cultures.

Expect to hear Santa’s theme song, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, on Friday and Saturday, December 14th and 15th, at the Camp Foster Theater. Corporal Nina Goralski, the band’s public information specialist, says the two 7 p.m. family oriented concerts are free, and open to the public.

The Ceremonial Band will mix its holiday tunes and tempo to include a Chanukah Celebration, a Jewish song, Imami, a Kwanzaa song meaning ‘faith’, a medley of Christmas music intertwined with a Marine theme, as well as traditional favorites. The III MEF Big Band, known for its 1940’s era Swing Era jazz, will be featured, together with a skit by featured vocalists. Goralski says the vocalists will also offer a tribute to those fallen in the war against terrorism.

Four conductors led by Chief Warrant Officer 2 Brown, the band officer, will oversee the music during the 90-minute concerts. Staff Sergeant Deborah Hamner, the enlisted conductor, Gunnery Sergeant Raul Caldera, the Big Band conductor, and Staff Sergeant Michael July, the guest conductor, will keep the audiences pumped up throughout the evenings with traditional numbers like Carol of the Drum and Stars and Stripes for Christmas, and more.

Of course, Santa Claus will be working the crowd both evenings. He’s expected to be busy handing out candy canes to the children.
