New national law emphasizes Okinawa tourism, IT industry

The details of the Okinawa New Development Law were approved by Gov. Keiichi Inamine and national ministers at the 18th meeting of the Okinawa Policy Conference held on Jan. 25 at the Diet in Tokyo. Structured around the promotion of tourism and information technology (IT), the new law also recommends utilizing former U.S. military base sites and addresses compensating the landowners. In addition, specifications for establishing the first special financial and IT districts are also set out. The development law will be submitted to the Diet’s General Assembly after being discussed at a Cabinet meeting on Feb. 8. Expected to be in force for 10 years and effective April 1, the law will replace current regulations expiring at the end of March.
