Neighbor confesses to killing Irabu Island woman

Date Posted: 2007-12-04

A 76-year-old farmer has admitted killing his elderly neighbor, telling police he “hated her because she took my radio, but didn’t return it.”
Fumi Sakumoto was found beaten to death in a field near her Irabu Island home November 17th. Irabu Island is located in the Miyakojima archipelago, south-west of Okinawa’s main island. Prefecture Police began investigating the neighbor after Sakumoto’s relatives and friends described how she’d told them “I’m afraid of the neighbor. I can’t even open my window because he is watching me.”
Interrogated by Prefecture Police, the neighbor confessed “Yes, I killed her with an ax.” He told police of the festering hatred stemming from a typhoon five years ago, when the winds blew his radio to Sakumoto’s home. “I saw it there,” he told police, “but she never returned it so I was mad at her.” Police then arrested the farmer.
