Courtney Christmas & Holiday Festival toasts holidays

‘Tis the season to be jolly, but if you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, keep on dreaming because it’s not likely to happen while living on a lovely tropical island.

Kick off the Christmas holiday season the Okinawa way with a holly, jolly holiday celebration at the Courtney Christmas & Holiday Festival. Build sandcastles instead of snowmen, and shout “kanpai!” with Awamori instead of eggnog. Exchange smiles, gifts, telephone numbers, and--with a little help from mistletoe-- even friendly kisses.

Marine Corps Community Services Okinawa hosts the Courtney Christmas & Holiday Festival Saturday, Dec. 1st from 3 to 10 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 2nd from 1 to 10 p.m. at Camp Courtney’s Commissary/PX complex. It’s a free community event with loads of fun for individuals of all ages, and is open to everyone island-wide.

The Courtney Christmas & Holiday Festival, held annually and filled with free entertainment, game booths, amusement rides and Kiddie Land, also includes enough cultural cuisine to please the heartiest appetite. Live entertainment abounds, including the “summer vacation” sound of Even the Sun and hip-hop group Dujeous, and the high-energy Orlando Magic Dancers will close the festival with a one-hour performance Sunday night.

Athletes and weekend warriors also have a chance to take part in the Courtney Christmas & Holiday Festival. The” Toys for Tots” Open Softball Tournament will be held at 9 a.m. both days at the Camp Courtney PX Softball Field. Toys of equal or greater value may be donated. Team and individual awards will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd-place winners.

Getting into the spirit of the holiday season, MCCS is offering great giveaways and prizes provided by generous sponsors. Whether you’ve been naughty or nice, there just might be a gift for you. This year, one lucky winner will win round-trip tickets to one of five United Airlines (UAL) destinations, or a seating upgrade aboard UAL flights departing from Japan, courtesy of UAL and Omega World Travel.

This year, with the support of Mattel, Toys “R” Us, and AFN Wave89, MCCS Okinawa brings a special program that exemplifies the holiday spirit—the Giving Trees. Two “giving” trees will take root at the 2007 Courtney Christmas & Holiday Festival and provide 60 lucky kids (30 boys and 30 girls) with an early holiday present courtesy of Mattel on Saturday, Dec. 1st at 3:30 p.m. The names of the winning kids will be drawn from an entry box located at participating Toys “R” Us outlets on Okinawa, Wave89 listeners, and festival attendees. The Giving Trees Promotion is open to children 12 years and under. Visit www.mccsokinawa.com for a complete set of rules.

Please be prepared to show a photo I.D. at the gate. No one will be admitted with pets, bottles, outside alcohol, or coolers. For more information, call 645-5835/5827.
