Fisherman slips, falls, dies near Cape Zampa

Date Posted: 2007-11-27

A Saturday fishing excursion turned deadly for a man cleaning his equipment near Cape Zampa Lighthouse in the Yomitan Village area.
Five men from the same company had been fishing the area, and were preparing to go home in early afternoon. One man was using ropes to drop buckets into the swirling sea, collecting water to rinse equipment. Officials say the man apparently lost his balance and plummeted 10 meters down the cliff, crashing into the ocean.
Friends immediately scrambled down to the base of the cliff, but it was too late. It was low tide, and they were able to recover their colleague’s body 30 meters from shore, submerged in the water. The man was pronounced dead on arrival at an area hospital.
