Naha City eyes expanding into elementary school building

Date Posted: 2007-11-27

Naha City is bursting at the seams, and Mayor Takeshi Onaga says it’s time to expand the city’s infrastructure and offices.
The prefecture’s capital city, Naha has been growing in recent years, stretching facilities to the maximum. Now, the mayor says, “we need more land for new city offices because the city is adding new administrative divisions, and the board of education is going to be joining us.” Onaga says the current property housing City Hall is too small and narrow to consider expansion.
Kainan Elementary School may be the ideal solution for the city’s expansion requirements, the mayor says, adding though that no decisions have been made yet. The elementary school is adjacent to City Hall in downtown Naha City. “Of course,” the mayor says, “we need to discuss this more with citizens and the board of education, then decide what’s best for Naha citizens.”
Mayor Onaga says children attending Kainan Elementary School can easily be transferred to any of three nearby schools: Kumoji, Jougaku or Tenpi elementary schools. “I am ready to talk to everybody,” the mayor says, “and think together what is the best way to go. We will have to make a public debate on this.”
