Three company owners arrested in Kunigami construction scandal

Date Posted: 2007-11-22

Bid rigging, lying and falsifying documents to Okinawa Prefecture has led to the arrest of three construction company owners working in northern Okinawa’s Kunigami Village.

The company owners are charged with misstating facts in order to obtain subsidy money before they performed the work. Okinawa Prefecture Police made the arrests, charging them with big rigging. The police action sent ripples of fear through the tiny Kunigami Village, which depends on the companies for much of its livelihood.

Twenty investigators swept into the Kunigami Village Office to investigate. “We were very shocked,” the Village Mayor, Kousaku Uehara said. “Even though only construction companies got arrested, the village office was searched.” Residents and officials are trying to figure now what impact the arrests and work stoppages by the three companies will have on the village economy.
