Elementary school PTA cash ripped off from school safe

Date Posted: 2007-11-22

More than Y620,000 in PTA funds at a Naha City elementary school are missing from a safe in the school office, and nobody can explain how it disappeared.

The school principal says PTA money is normally kept in the bank, but this time was in the school safe because PTA events had just finished. He says an accountant was to check the money and determine how much profit had been made before it went to the bank.

The accountant who opened the safe found it empty. The money was gone, and investigators are now trying to figure how it happened. There are three keys to the safe, one kept by the PTA staff and two by school staff. Keys, officials say, are kept in a location determined by the school principal.

Each side denies any knowledge of what happened, and both concede someone could have known about where keys were kept. At the same time, school staff and PTA leaders and parents are eying each other suspiciously.
