Irabu Island woman’s violent death being investigated as a homicide

A 79-year-old Irabu Island woman has been found dead in a sugar cane field, brutally beaten in the head.

Fumi Sakumoto had lived on Miyakojima’s Irabu Island here entire life, working alongside her family in the fields. Saturday was no different for Sakumoto, who lived near the sugar cane fields, as she headed off alone. She never came home, and relatives began searching for her.

They found her lying in a cane field, her body broken and beaten. Police theorize an axe type weapon was used against Sakumoto, as her forehead had been smashed and cut deeply. The weapon has not been found. The woman lived in the farming district with her husband.
