Double murders shatter calm on Yagaji Island

Date Posted: 2007-11-20

Two men were stabbed to death Monday evening on tiny Yagaji Island, off the Yonashiro coast.
The assailant telephoned police at 9:16 p.m., telling them to send an ambulance because “I stabbed two men”. Uruma City Police responded, and found two men lying in a field, bleeding from their necks and chests. The murders occurred in the Gabe area, on K-Farm property, where garden plants are grown.
Police identified the two victims as Kiyofumi Hanashiro, 56, and Toshiaki Uechi, 41. Both men were company owners, and were relatives. They were dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.
The self-confessed murderer, now officially a suspect in the double homicide, has been identified as 53-year-old Katsuhiro Kohama, who runs a transportation company. Kohama told police he stabbed the men because “We had trouble for the job.”
Police say Hanashiro, Kohama and his brother had been drinking at Kohama’s K-Farm, then began fighting. They called Uechi to come talk with them, and the trouble escalated. Kohama told police “We had trouble between the three of us.”
