Sunset Mihama up for sale after government rejects waiver

Date Posted: 2007-11-13

Another Okinawa facility established by the Pension, Health Insurance Welfare Facility Resolution Corporation has fallen victim to the Trinity Reform Program instituted by former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Sunset Mihama, which opened in 2000, has been a popular and financially lucrative hotel facility, serving the Chatan Town community. The Resolution Corporation rules called for every project to be disposed of within five years of construction, and Sunset Mihama had two one-year extensions to that rule.
Toichiro Mizushima, chairman of the Sunset Mihama located in American Village, has appealed to the Chatan Town Mayor, telling Masaharu Noguni he has no choice but to put the facility up for sale. Public bidding will begin in March, with an announcement of the winning company next October.
Chatan Town appealed to Resolution Corporation for another exception to policy, noting Sunset Mihama was profitable and heavily used by local citizens. Resolution Corporation rejected the plea, noting rules are rules, and nothing can be done except close or sell the facility.
