Drug smuggler busted on arrival in Okinawa

Date Posted: 2007-11-05

It took police more than 12 hours to get the evidence on a man smuggling marijuana into Okinawa, and even then it took help from a team of doctors.
The man arriving at Naha International Airport was carrying 94 bags of marijuana, each with 233 grams of the drug. Asked by Okinawa District Airport Customs officials if he had any undeclared drugs, he admitted he did, and that hed obtained them from India.
The problem was, the man had ingested the packets, requiring a trip to the Tomishiro Police Station, and then to a hospital. Doctors gave the smuggler a laxative, which worked its magic and produced the 94 bags over a period of 12 hours.
Police say the marijuana has a street value of 1.86 million. The man told police he bought the drugs for his personal use, but officers suspect he was bringing it to Okinawa to sell and distribute.
