Army on Okinawa opens gift shop

Date Posted: 2007-11-01

The Army on Okinawa is set to open its own gift shop on Torii Station next week.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new gift shop, designed and to be operated by The Army Community Group of Okinawa, a group of Army and Department of Defense civilian spouses, is set for 10 a.m. on November 8th. The shop will sell handcrafted one-of-a-kind pieces of art work, jewelry, photos and baby items created by local artisans, including members of the Army Community Group of Okinawa.

Store Manager Mrs. Amy Garrett says there will also be items donated from local sources, including antique stores. Yet other items will be imported. The Gift Shop is located behind Torii Station Education Center. It will operate Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays 10 a.m. ~ 2 p.m. The Education Center and gift shop are just past the Shoppette and swimming pool, in Building 243.

Gift Shop proceeds, says Army Community Group of Okinawa President Chanda Dressler and vice president Debbie Maraia, will go to support education programs, as well as local military and Japanese charities.
