Welfare insurance center looking for private buyer

Date Posted: 2007-11-01

The Pair Lay Okinawa, a social welfare health insurance center in Okinawa City, is facing closure unless a private buyer makes a move.

The Independent Civil Service Corporate Body has announced plans to close the center located in the Matsumoto area of Okinawa City, but has left the door open for a private entity to purchase the facility. The ICSCB’s Pension Health Insurance Welfare Facility Arrangement Organization has set December 6th as the date for bids on the center to be submitted.

“This center has been doing so well,” says the Center director. “Citizens have been very much interesting in using it to stay healthy, so we home a company will buy it and keep it going.” He says the Center had been planning for the future, when the baby boom generation begins retiring.

The Center has a swimming pool, study and tatami rooms, and classrooms used by more than 2.4 million people during the past 12 years.

Officials say there are similar facilities elsewhere in Okinawa Prefecture, including Sashiki Town’s Welsanpia IOkinawa and Chatan Town’s Sunset Mihama that are going up for sale or facing closure. Private companies are being encouraged to purchase the facilities and keep them open as businesses serving citizens. Under the Trinity Plan initiated by former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, budget programs were realigned, requiring such facilities to be sold or closed within five years.
