Typhoon Etau decimates bird colony on Senaga Island

Although typhoon Etau left Okinawa with relatively little damage, it proved fatal to a bird colony on Senaga Island neat to Naha Airport. According to local bird watching enthusiasts, Senaga had been the home to at least some 40 nests of egrets, black crowns and other birds. Senaga is also the nearest place where residents of the southern part of Okinawa can go to hear birds singing. Following the typhoon, all of the nests were blown away. All had had chicks which now lay dead in the bushes.
