Laid back Okinawa men Japan’s worst at waking up in the morning

Date Posted: 2007-10-27

Okinawa men have propelled this southern Prefecture into the nation’s top position for being worst at getting out of bed in the morning.
A nationwide study conducted by the Ministry of Public Management found Okinawan males don’t wake up until 6:50 am, five minutes later than Fukuoka Prefecture men who crawl out of bed at 6:45 am. The Japanese early birds are in Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan; they wake up at 6:22 a.m. The survey attributes the finding to Okinawans’ penchant for staying up late in the evening, following a lifestyle that is slow and easy.

Okinawan women fell into third place with their 6:50 a.m. average wake up time. First and worst were Tokyo women, who don’t get up until 6:52 a.m., and second place honors went to Kyoto women who arose at 6:51 a.m.

Okinawa officials are encouraging Okinawa men to make an effort to get up five minutes earlier each morning, but concede it promises to be a difficult challenge in getting people to change lifestyles. Still, they cite the Japanese proverb ‘The early bird gets the worm’, and point out that the cool season is the ideal time to wake early and take time to read books, do exercises, or get to work earlier.
